This is Sri Amma Nanammal who, at 98, currently holds the distinction of India’s oldest female yoga instructor, and second-oldest in the world (the aforementioned Tao Porchon-Lynch is just a few months older).

Via Quartz India:

“Nanammal, the 98-year-old yoga expert from the southern state of Tamil Nadu, believes that, in its true form, yoga…is about peace and relaxation, and this is what she’s been practicing every day for nearly a century…To this day, she’s never stepped into a hospital…She’s now become a celebrity in the yoga, and wellness world and videos of her performing complicated asanas have gone viral, attracting millions of views”.

She first learned yoga from her family at age 10, and has not skipped a single day of practice since. In 1972, after helping to heal a leg injury that her mother had sustained, she decided to take that knowledge public and opened the Ozone Yoga School in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Since then, Nanammal and her family have taught over 100,000 people.

She continues to share her knowledge both locally and internationally, as she often appears at yoga festivals and gatherings. I JUST missed her in NYC earlier this month, hopefully I’ll have another chance to learn from her in person. Am so grateful for the wisdom of our elders!
